Bible verses memorization is commonplace in the contemporary Church. It can be in Sunday Faculty, on website providers, in emails, flashcards, and probably any other spot you can consider to place a verse. The problem is: Is it helpful?
Possibly you are — or were — like me. I imagined I was a bad Christian. I had tons of Bible stories floating all around, even a several vital verses, but I could never don’t forget them just suitable.
I would say some thing like, “Current yourselves a living sacrifice, that you… eh… are appropriate to God… and… eh… establish Him deserving.” But, I might do the job at it, read through and study extra, and I would get better at remembering the verses, but would have hassle remembering reserve, chapter, and verse.
Then I would say, “Oh, I know them effectively, I just will not know where they reside.”
At that time, I was a Christian for about 12 decades. My close friend, a veritable toddler in the faith (2 a long time,) was quoting scriptures until eventually he was blue in the facial area. Honestly, I was jealous.
That’s exactly where my coronary heart was. I wanted to understand Bible Memory Verses just to demonstrate I understood anything, achieve recognition, display I was a ‘man of God.’
Now, I have not arrived still, but I have surely remaining. I recognized my frame of mind was erroneous and began searching at this whole strategy of memory verses. What does the Bible say? Properly, it truly isn’t going to say significantly about memorizing verses. There are a few verses that can be interpreted into memorizing, but I would go a step even more. We are not just to memorize verses, but to concentrate intently on them, feel on them, rehearse them in our minds and hearts, and chew on it like a cow chewing its cud having each and every final little bit of nourishment.
So, what’s the big difference amongst memorizing and meditating? What could possibly appear like a little make any difference will make a massive difference in your existence.
God explained to the Israelites make scripture integral to their lifetime:
“These commandments that I give you right now are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your youngsters. Speak about them when you sit at residence and when you wander along the street, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your fingers and bind them on your foreheads. Create them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” – Deut. 6:6-9 (NIV)
The to start with instruction on meditation takes place in Joshua 1:8. God tells Joshua that he is (we are) to meditate on the e-book of the law working day and night time. Why? “That you may possibly be watchful to do almost everything published in it. Then you will be affluent and profitable.” (NIV) The word meditate is the Hebrew term ‘Hagah’ (Strong’s H1897) which suggests to mumble, mutter, utter or communicate. God tells Joshua, “You want to fill Moses shoes, then consider about and discuss about what is written day and evening. Sure, even the ebook of Numbers.”
Then once again, David writes, “[The blessed man’s] delight is in the regulation of the LORD, and on his regulation he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:2 NIV emphasis mine)
Allow me digress. I do believe that that memorizing Bible verses is better than not memorizing. It can only reward you. BUT the Bible teaches going further than mere memorization. In point, it teaches us not just to memorize but to conceal the Phrase in our coronary heart and make it a element of who we are. Memorization consists of your mind although meditation consists of your coronary heart.
A simple story sums up this stage. A gentleman held a good friends and loved ones Xmas occasion. As they have been gathered close to the fireplace, they made the decision to, in the spirit of the time, estimate their most loved verses. The host, an eloquent speaker, arose and recited the 23rd Psalm (The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want….) The guests were being shocked at his flair for shipping and applauded. Soon after a number of many others, it was Grandma’s convert. Now Grandma had been dozing for about a fifty percent hour and experienced missed what was going on. The host carefully woke her and requested her to recite her beloved verse. The Grandmother sat up, cleared her throat, and recited the 23rd Psalm. When she was concluded, there was not a dry eye in the home.
As his company were being leaving, one particular close friend approached him and stated, “I really don’t get it, what was the big difference involving your recitation and your Grandmother’s? They were similar.” The host smiled and merely explained, “I know the Psalm. She is familiar with the Shepherd.”
So start out these days. Get a favored memory verse, or glimpse-up popular verse, and get the initial action past memorization. Publish it on the pill of your heart. Following a month, the results may perhaps shock you.
